What’s Happenin’ Wednesday

Last minute shopping? You might be running up against shipping deadlines online, but there’s still plenty of time to fill that empty space under your tree with local items – and we have some suggestions for you. Check out our local holiday gift guide for recommendations on five gifts for the food-loving friend or family member in your life.

In the kitchen. It’s that time of year where many of us are fortunate enough to have a few extra days off from work. If that time means you find yourself in the kitchen a little more than normal, I’m just going to leave these recipes from Tasting Table for French onion soup dumplings and a pomegranate curd tart right here.

A lesson in crisis communications. If you’re a chef, it’s probably not the best idea to include one of your recipes along with any kind of public apology. For some reason, Mario Batali thought we needed to hear about those pizza dough cinnamon rolls, though. I’ll let CNN explain that one.

Beef stroganoff, golden retrievers and “Cash Me Outside.”. What do they have in common, you ask? Fair question. All three made Google’s list of top searches from the 2017 calendar year. More details on this year’s list here.

Restaurant spotlight, the ‘burbs edition. Thrillist put together a round-up of the best suburbs for people who love food, and it seemed like a timely thing to share ahead of holiday travel in case any of you find yourselves in Annandale, Virginia or Decatur, Georgia (or one of the several other suburbs featured) searching for a bite to eat.

The last Richmond restaurant opening in 2017? We have a feeling it might be Casa del Barco, the second location of the restaurant which is set to open at Short Pump Town Center on Friday, December 22. Read more about the newest spot from HOUSEpitality Family in Virginia Business.

What to add to your calendar

Movie madness. I don’t know about you, but I watch a lot (!) of movies during the month of December. I just want to get all of the holiday movies in, and I still have four on my to watch list for this coming week – Love Actually, Home Alone, The Santa Claus and A Christmas Carol, in case you were curious. One of the best places for holiday movies? The Byrd Theatre in Carytown, which has had quite a few holiday showtimes in the last few weeks with several more to go, including the annual showing of It’s A Wonderful Life on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Movie showtimes here.

Poppin’ the bubbly. Barrel Thief Wine Shop & Cafe is hosting a champagne tasting this Thursday, December 21 from 5 – 8 p.m. $25 will get you a tasting of eight champagnes at an event that promises to be festive.

Ring in the new year with…fried chicken? For the third year in a row, Mean Bird and Ardent Craft Ales will be partnering for a New Year’s Day brunch, complete with chicken and waffles and biscuits and gravy, and of course, veggie bird. The gang will all be there from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. on January 1, 2018.

….speaking of 2018, we’re signing off until the New Year. We’ll be back with more food news the first week in January. Here’s to health and happiness and a lot of good food in the year ahead!
