All of the news, Richmond restaurant news that is. Things are ramping up this week with the official opening of Little Nickel for lunch service a couple of days ago (with dinner service to come February 8th — aka tiki cocktails are coming!), I mean would you look at this dish they grammed?! Also opening this week is The Jasper, which opened yesterday, a cocktail bar in Carytown. They have nitro bourbon and ginger, whatever that is, and we can’t wait to make a visit. In sad news, The Paulie just announced its final day as a pop-up lunch spot at Comfort, you have until February 9th to get your fix. We’ll wrap things up with two notable pizza-focused announcements: (1) word on the street is that 8 1/2 is opening a SECOND location in the former Stroops spot (RIP) (2) Nota Bene piqued my interest this week with a subtle post about some new patio space. Bring on the warmer weather!
Start planning now for Sunday. Time to put your game plan together for the big game this weekend. Whether you’re cheering on your favorite team, watching for the commercials or tuning in for Justin Timberlake’s halftime show, what we can all agree on is that the dips, snacks and finger foods are the stars of the show. Not sure what to bring to the party? Here are more than 100 suggestions from Serious Eats, Bon Appetit and Epicurious. Bonus points if you make this incredible creation that BA developed on an episode of the Foodcast.
Apparently, this is a trend? How long until one opens up in Richmond?
Eat like an Olympian. But does that mean you have to train like one too? Ever since Michael Phelps shared his insane eating regime a few years ago, I’ve always found the diets of our most elite athletes interesting. And I’m super pumped for the Winter Olympics to start next week. Here’s a peek into what members of team USA will be eating leading up to the competition. Spoiler alert: Avocados are very popular.
What to add to your calendar
Will run for donuts, or biscuits or bagels. Straight outta Charlottesville, Tread Happy, a group run studio, officially opens on February 5th. I’m hitting one of the preview week classes this weekend, so if you’ve ever taken one of their classes let me know what to expect!
Gals day/night. Valentine’s Day is so 2017. Laura Lee’s is hosting Galentine’s Day on February 13, they’ll have some to be announced specials, prizes and a couple of special guests. Also celebrating on 2/13 is Ginger Juice, with free pink superfood lattes. This promo is for their Greengate location only and will also feature samples of their new menu.
A pair of pop-ups. Meg mentioned Pho Q as a newcomer to Richmond’s pop-up scene in last week’s What’s Happenin’ Wednesday and this week I’m here to tell you about another. While Kudzu has already done a few events, it might not be on your radar yet. This Asian inspired pop-up offers ramen, small plates (tots!) and sandwiches is continuing its run at Branch and Vine. Kudzu’s next pop-up on February 19 will feature Buffalo ramen — you can view the full menu here. I’ll take all the scallion pancakes, please!
