What’s Happenin’ Wednesday

What’s Happenin’ Wednesday

We’re not mulin’ around. It’s Mule Month at Beijing on Grove, which means the restaurant is featuring five different takes on the classic Moscow Mule for the month of July. If you’re mapping out the best time to visit, we suggest going during happy hour which the restaurant offers seven days a week from 3-7 p.m.

No surprise, it’s July. It should come as no surprise that I LOVE when BuzzFeed puts together the handy-dandy little round-ups of what’s in season each month along with a bunch of timely recipe ideas. I mean, it just makes things so easy. Here’s the list of 31 things you should cook this July. The BuzzFeed team has already convinced me that this is going to be the month that I attempt grilled pizza and make these ridiculously cute fruit crisps in mason jars.

We’ll start with the good news. Richmond Wine Station is now open in Scott’s Addition, the team behind Sabai is opening a new restaurant in the former space of The Jerk Pit, and one of our favorite places – North End Juice Co. – has added an ice cream shop, North End Ice Cream, next to the juice bar. In sad news, recent fires at two well-loved local restaurants, Don’t Look Back and The Tobacco Company, mean that the restaurants will be closed until further notice. Thankfully, everyone is okay.

This has nothing to do with food. No really, I promise. But if you live in Richmond you will probably be happy to know that the Byrd Theatre has started the process of replacing new seats (yay for comfy chairs!) and you can check out more details about that whole process over on RVAHub. In other RVA news, Richmond Raceway rebranded and has announced a major redevelopment project.

Watch this if you’re a lobster lover. Thrillist has a new YouTube channel, Food/Groups, which looks at different communities and the foods and food practices by which they define themselves. A new episode rolls out every Monday morning, and one of the latest episodes takes a look at lobster and what it means to the state of Maine.

This takes outdoor seating to a whole new level. A new restaurant in Virginia Beach, The Yard at Ocean 27, is the first restaurant in the area to be completely outdoors — that’s right, no windows or walls for this place. You can learn more about it over on The Virginian-Pilot website.

What to add to your calendar

Here’s the scoop. National Ice Cream Day is quickly approaching, celebrated each year on the third Sunday in July, which falls this year on July 16. If you’re looking for the best ice cream options in RVA, check out Visit Richmond’s recent blog post which includes quite a few ice cream spots where you can get your sweet tooth on.

CAVA times two. If my Instagram feed is any indication, Richmonders love some CAVA. The Short Pump location opens its doors this week, and the restaurant is celebrating with the Summer Savor Fest at CAVA Short Pump this Thursday from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. You can expect free food, lawn games, brews from Hardywood Park Craft Brewery, treats from Whisk and more. Details here.

Let’s get this party started. Fire, Flour & Fork may still be a few months away, but the free kick-off event is happening this Sunday. Taking place at Libbie Mill Midtown from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., the family-friendly event will feature a pickle contest, a bake walk, a culinary spelling bee and more.
